Solo Travel: Why You Should Visit Kyrgyzstan

In a world where overtourism is taking over countries, it's a good time for travellers to visit less-known places. Kyrgyzstan is a country that's full of natural beauty, culture and doesn't come with the crowds that overrun popular destinations like Barcelona or Venice; it has endless rolling hills, towering mountains and relaxing lakes; it's the perfect destination for off-the-beaten-path travellers that are less interested in Instagram hotspots and are instead seeking adventure and tranquillity.

A Tapestry of Natural Beauty

With views comparable to Switzerland, Kyrgyzstan is a place with endless vistas, mountain scenery and nature as far as the eye can see. From lush valleys to turquoise alpine lakes, it's an immersive experience. It offers the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of cities and to be able to switch off.

The Tian Shan Mountain Range is part of the Himalayas and dominates the skyline, making it the perfect destination for hikers and outdoorsy people. It's also perfect for those who just want to be among nature and don't plan on trekking miles.

Kyrgyzstan's Lakes

The largest in Kyrgyzstan is called Issyk-Kul; it spreads as far as the eye can see, making it seem more like a sea than a lake. It's a place where locals and tourists alike come to enjoy the summer months. It's also an ideal spot for sleeping under the stars in a yurt.

Learn About Kyrgyz Culture

Beyond the mountains, Kyrgyzstan has a rich culture with a history of nomadic societies shaping hearty cuisine and dishes like Beshbarmak. The culture of sharing food and time with those around you is still strong and beautiful to see or experience as a traveller. It's not yet a country overcome by globalisation and trends, so you can still witness the traditional Kyrgyz way of life.

There's also music to enjoy if you're lucky enough to listen to someone playing the komuz, a traditional instrument from Turkic culture that creates a captivating melody. There are songs and stories to go along with the music of heroes and battles long over.

Going Past Stereotypes

Central Asia is a part of the world that still confuses many people; some imagine Borat, and others couldn't point out Kyrgyzstan on the map. But it's changing, and more people are moving past the stereotypes of the region. It can still be challenging to get around as roads can be a little rough in some places, and incredibly, more than 90% of Kyrgyzstan is covered in the mountains, so it's best to be an experienced driver if you plan on renting a car or it's easier to travel with a guide.

There are homestays and guesthouses throughout the country, especially close to popular places like Issk-Kul and Ala Archa National Park, which can be visited from Bishkek. It's not only a country to visit for outdoor enthusiasts; it's a perfect country for getting away from your phone and disconnecting from wi-fi for a few days to enjoy the simple things in life like good company, sunsets, mountain views and clean air.

Kyrgyzstan is a country you won't forget; it doesn't have the same tourist traps, overpriced trendy photo ops and hoards of tourists lining up for a selfie. Instead, it offers the chance to experience untouched nature, learn about ancient nomadic cultures, and try new things. It's an opportunity to travel off the beaten path and step outside your comfort zone.
